CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Tory.” Finn said her name in a hushed voice. “Tory,” he said again. He leaned over and eased her back from the air bag. She was out cold. Damn. He immediately turned off the engine and the headlights. He glanced in the mirrors, but he couldn’t see the top of the embankment. It wouldn’t take long for whoever the hell these guys were to get down here. He and Tory needed to be gone when that happened.

“Tory,” he called softly again and squeezed her shoulder.

She groaned. She was waking up. Thank God. He’d been worried. He still was. He reached over and touched her face. “Tory, honey, we have to move.” He undid his seatbelt and then undid hers. “I’m going to get out and then come around and get you, okay?” No response. “Tory, honey, you have to wake up now.”

He opened his door as quietly as possible and slid out of the truck. Then he closed it with a soft click. Something dripped into his eye. He wiped at it with his hand. It came away wet. Blood. He must have banged his head on something.

As he moved around the front of the SUV and the tree that was now a hood ornament, the darkness was suddenly lit up by high-powered flashlights. He crouched down behind the tree.

The flashlight beams danced all over the SUV, and the low hum of conversation reached him. He couldn’t make out their words, but there were three of them up there looking for a way down. The flashlights went over to his right. They must have spotted an easier route than the one he’d taken with the truck. It was almost a sheer drop. He’d been fucking lucky as hell the SUV hadn’t rolled the whole way.

Moving swiftly, he opened the passenger door as soundlessly as possible. The three men were making noise coming down the embankment so he doubted they heard him. He reached in and grabbed Tory’s shoulder, giving her a gentle shake. “Tory, wake up.” She moaned again. He needed her awake now. They had to move. He leaned in and kissed her hard on the mouth. It was that or smack her, and he wasn’t interested in hitting a woman no matter what the circumstances.

Her eyes flew open and she gasped. “What?”

He pressed his hand to her lips to quiet her. “Shh. The men who are after us are coming down the embankment. Do you think you can walk?”

Slightly bewildered, she looked around, but nodded. She shifted and slid out of the truck. Her knees buckled, but he caught her and held her against his chest. “Are you sure you’re okay to walk?” he whispered into her ear. He couldn’t see her well enough in the darkness to know for sure, but she didn’t seem hurt.

“Yeah, fine. I’m…I’m good now. Let’s go,” she whispered back.

He released her but reached into the foot well to grab his phone and then pocketed it. He took her hand. “Keep low.”

He moved toward the front of the SUV again.
